Speaker Bios

Linda A. Beltz, Ph.D., NPDP
Linda is currently Director, Technology Partnerships at Weyerhaeuser.  In this role, Linda worked with John Tao to implement Open Innovation at Weyerhaeuser.  Linda is responsible for alliances and partner activities with for-profit, non-profit, university and national labs.  She is also responsible for government contracts.

Linda has been with Weyerhaeuser 10 years.  Prior to her current role, she led the transition for Weyerhaeuser’s biofuel JV with Chevron, Catchlight Energy, and held technical and market development leadership positions in the businesses.  Before joining Weyerhaeuser, Linda worked with Mead and International Paper in technical leadership, capital project, manufacturing and scientist roles.

Linda holds a Ph.D. and a B.S from the University of Washington in Pulp and Paper Engineering.  She has also completed the Executive Business Program at Louisiana State University and is in the Executive Scholars Program at Kellogg School of Management.  Linda is also a Certified New Product Development Professional through the Product Development and Management Association.

Valerie J. Camara
Valerie J. Camara is Managing Counsel in the Patent Department at Merck & Co., Inc.  Her group handles the patent procurement work for the respiratory and immunology franchise.  She is licensed to practice in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office.  She received her law degree from Seton Hall University, her Master’s of Science degree in Organic Chemistry from Purdue University and her Bachelor’s of Science in Chemistry from City University of New York-Brooklyn College.

Ms. Camara has been with Merck since 1985, when she started her career as a Staff Chemist.  In 1989, she joined Merck's Office of General Counsel, where she began her legal career.  She attended law school at night, while receiving legal training in Merck's Patent Department.  In 1993, she was promoted to the level of Patent Attorney, and subsequently has held positions of increasing responsibility.

Ms. Camara serves on the board of New Jersey Corporate Counsel Association (NJCCA), where she has held a number of leadership positions.  She also serves on the board of Central Jersey Legal Services, which is a non-profit organization that provides pro bono legal services to the poor and disadvantaged residents of Union, Middlesex and Mercer counties in New Jersey.

Cheryl Cejka
Cheryl Cejka leads PNNL’s intellectual property management, portfolio development and investment, and technology commercialization activities. She has held a broad range of business management and technology development positions with PNNL (a $1B Department of Energy national lab) and for Battelle, which operates PNNL and five other DOE national laboratories. Her areas of expertise include licensing, finance, contracts, business and technology development, and commercialization.

Since becoming director, Cheryl has dramatically increased PNNL’s annual returns from intellectual assets. She has led the creation of many significant technology licensing arrangements, including the establishment of several new technology-based business ventures.

Under her leadership, PNNL is recognized as a leader in commercialization “best practices” across the DOE and 300+ federal lab system making Cheryl a sought-out speaker and advisor. Cheryl is a member of the Board of Trustees for LES USA/Canada and a board member for the Washington State University School of Business/Entrepreneurship Program.  She holds an MBA in Finance and an undergraduate degree in Marketing, both from the University of Washington.

Michael J. Cleare
Dr. Cleare worked for 30 years at Johnson Matthey plc, a UK based multinational world leader in advanced materials technology. His experiences range from the Senior R&D Executive through Business Development to a range of senior business management positions, and included serving on the main Board of the Company.  While in R&D he was involved in the discovery and development of a major new class of platinum based anti-cancer drugs (carboplatin). 
From 2000-7 Dr. Cleare was the Executive Director of Science and Technology Ventures at Columbia University in New York. This position included responsibility for all Technology Transfer activities at Columbia and involved licensing, startup companies, Industrial Research funding and Domestic and International partnerships relating to IP.  In August 2007 he joined the University of Pennsylvania as Associate Vice Provost for Research, responsible for all Technology transfer, IP management and industrial liaison activities.

Dr Cleare has negotiated numerous large licensing deals with industrial entities, and recently led the Penn team which completed a major collaboration and licensing deal with Novartis in the field of modified T cell therapies to treat cancer.

James Finnegan
Jim Finnegan serves as Vice President, Intellectual Property Strategy at Comcast Corporation.  In this role, Mr. Finnegan provides direction and resources to utilize Comcast’s significant intellectual property assets to support the business objectives of the Company.  

Finnegan joined Comcast in 2007 with close to twenty years experience in the intellectual property field.  Prior to Comcast, he served as Vice President, Intellectual Property, for Qimonda AG in Munich, Germany. He has also served in various consulting roles to major communications and electronics firms.  Finnegan also spent 17 years at AT&T and Lucent Technologies as a leading contributor to their intellectual property businesses where he developed and implemented profitable patent licensing strategies with major Japanese and US high technology companies. He also managed Lucent’s worldwide portfolio of over twenty-five thousand patents.  He began his career in semiconductor engineering for AT&T.

He serves on the Intellectual Property Law Program Advisory Board at the Earle Mack School of Law at Drexel University.  He has spoken at various venues on the value of intellectual property and standards licensing including the National Academies’ Board on Science, Technology and Economic Policy and at the Licensing Executive Society’s National Conferences.

Finnegan holds an M.B.A from Lehigh University, where he also earned a Master’s Degree and Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering.

Sean Flanigan
Sean Flanigan studied law at the University of Ottawa and has been a member of the Ontario Bar since 1993. At the University of Ottawa Mr. Flanigan leads the team responsible for industrial liaison, technology development and transfer, new company creation and student entrepreneurship.  In 2006 he became active in AUTM and in 2008 Mr. Flanigan became Vice President for Canada.  In 2010 he was part of the team that formed the Alliance of Technology Transfer Professionals (ATTP), which brought the Registered Technology Transfer Professional (RTTP) designation to the profession.  In the fall of 2011 Mr. Flanigan was elected as President-Elect of AUTM and will serve as President between March 2013 and February 2014.  The University of Ottawa, is a comprehensive university with more than 40,000 students located in the heart of the Nation’s Capital and is one of Canada’s top 10 research universities with annual research expenditures exceeding $275M.

Nancy Hermanson
Nancy Hermanson is a Sr. Manager at Kimberly-Clark Corporation.  Her teams are responsible for technology out-licensing, managing the Intellectual Assets for corporate R&D and the consumer brands, and providing business information.  Kimberly-Clark and its well-known global brands are an indispensable part of life for people in more than 150 countries. With brands such as Kleenex, Scott, Huggies, Pull-Ups, Kotex, and Depend, Kimberly-Clark holds No. 1 or No. 2 share positions in more than 80 countries.

Before coming to K-C, Nancy spent 21 years at Dow Chemical working in R&D and Intellectual Capital Management.  Early in her career she worked in Technical Service & Development guiding customers in product development using Dow Plastics.  As Dow’s Medical Market Technical Leader, Nancy was recognized as an expert in engineering thermoplastics and how they are affected by various medical sterilization techniques.  In 1999, Nancy moved into Intellectual Capital Management working with several Dow businesses focused on developing IP protection strategies and alternate value capture options for various growth platforms.  Nancy graduated from Northwestern University with a degree in Material Science & Engineering

David R. Jarczyk
As President & CEO of ktMINE, David Jarczyk plays a pivotal role in managing the overall business operations and innovations of this intangible property data and information services firm.

Prior to ktMINE, David served in roles of increasing responsibility as a transfer pricing economist at Deloitte & Touche and Arthur Andersen, and was a founding partner of Ceteris – recognized by the Inc 500|5000 List of America’s Fastest Growing Companies. In his former roles, David performed transfer pricing services for multinational companies for tangible, services and intangible property transactions.

David also has expertise in conducting economic analyses in a variety of industries and in performing business enterprise and intangible property valuations.

David has presented for numerous organizations and published articles on various aspects of intangible property economics and valuation. David was named to the 2011 and 2012 editions of the IAM Strategy 300 (formerly 250) – The World’s Leading IP Strategists. In October, 2011, David was voted in as Vice Chair of the Licensing Executive Society International IP Valuation Committee and was appointed to the Licensing Executives Society CLP Marketing & Outreach Committee in 2012.

David is accredited with a CLP designation and also holds an MBA and BS in Economics and Finance from DePaul University in Chicago Illinois.

Anne Murphy Kelley
Anne Murphy Kelley serves as Assistant General Counsel and Senior Director, Intellectual Property in the Supply Chain, at Microsoft Corporation.  Her current focus is intellectual property issues in the global supply chain, enhancing the rule of law, and making meaningful pro bono legal opportunities to her colleagues around the world.  She has been with Microsoft for 19 years and her previous experience at Microsoft includes managing Microsoft's Intellectual Property Licensing business and U.S. anti-piracy team. Ms. Kelley’s most recent publications are: Practicing Effectively in the Patent Marketplace in the University of Chicago Law Review and "Learnings from Microsoft's Immigrant and Refugee Rights Programs" in PLI’s Pro Bono Service By In-House Counsel: Strategies and Perspectives. Ms. Kelley is a member of the Board of Directors of the Washington Policy Center, a free market think tank focused on public policies for Washington State, and is President-Elect of the National Christ Child Society, whose mission is "Challenging Poverty One Child at a Time.”

Dr. Cheryl Martin
Dr. Cheryl Martin is the Deputy Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency–Energy (ARPA‐E) responsible for oversight of the Agency. Additionally, Dr. Martin leads ARPA‐E’s Technology‐to‐Market program, which helps breakthrough energy technologies succeed in the marketplace. Prior to joining ARPA‐E, Dr. Martin was an Executive in Residence with Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers, a venture capital firm based in Menlo Park, California.

Dr. Martin also spent 20 years with Rohm and Haas Company, starting her career as a Senior Scientist for the company’s Plastics Additives business and then holding various research and marketing roles in the Plastics Additives and Coatings businesses. In 2000, Dr. Martin was named Director, Investor Relations where she was responsible for Rohm and Haas’ interactions and relationships with the investment community. She later became Director, Financial Planning, and took on the responsibility for the planning, forecasting and management reporting activities of the company. Dr. Martin was named General Manager of the company’s Adhesives and Sealants business in North America in 2007 and also elected a Corporate Vice President. Most recently Cheryl had been the General Manager for the Paint and Coatings Materials business in Europe, Middle East and Africa. In this role, she was responsible for all aspects (technology, operations, sales and marketing) of the business in this region.

Dr. Martin earned a B.A. degree in chemistry from the College of the Holy Cross. She went on to earn a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). She is active in the American Chemical Society (ACS) at both the local and national levels and serves on the Board of Directors for Philabundance, the greater Philadelphia region’s largest hunger relief.

Scott Paul McDonald
Scott is the General Counsel for Intellectual Property at Mars, Inc.

Prior to that, he was the Associate General Counsel for Intellectual Property at the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company, beginning in January 2007.

Before that, he spent 15 years at BP and Amoco, last as global Chief Patent Counsel, and earlier as U.S. Chief Patent Counsel, Managing IP Attorney for Upstream and Downstream operations, and as a Senior IP Attorney supporting a diverse lot of business units and new business development teams. 

He also spent substantial time licensing Amoco’s polypropylene technology globally, on the IP aspects of several BP and Amoco M&A activities, and was the commercial and IP attorney for Amoco’s Plaskon Electronic Materials semiconductor encapsulant business located in Singapore.

Prior to his tenure with BP/Amoco, Scott was an associate at Jenner and Block, and before that spent eight years as a chemist and manager at the Dresden Nuclear Power Station in Morris, Illinois.

Scott’s professional activities include time on the Intellectual Property Owner’s Board of Directors previously representing BP and currently representing Mars, and long-standing participation in AIPLA’s Chemical Practice Committee.

Scott currently is an Adjunct Professor of Law at John Marshall Law School where he teaches Intellectual Property Licensing.

He attended Northwestern University Law School (J.D. cum laude) 1989, and received a M.S. in Nuclear Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana, in 1978, and a B.S. in Chemistry from there in 1976.

Tanya Moore
Tatiana Kaptsan Moore is a General Manager of IP Licensing in Microsoft’s corporate Intellectual Property Group. Her responsibilities include formulating outbound technology licensing strategies, identifying and negotiating licensing arrangements in various Microsoft technology areas, including financial valuations, and leading a team of licensing executives. In her IP career, she has led and participated in a wide variety of transactions involving the licensing of patents, know-how, copyrighted materials, and trademarks, as well as asset sales, divestitures and joint ventures.

Prior to assuming her position with Microsoft, Ms. Moore was a key member of IBM’s Intellectual Property & Licensing organization. Ms. Moore joined IBM in 1980 and spent the early part of her career in software development for a number of IBM’s operating systems. She has held numerous technical positions, including project and quality management, where she received many awards. During this time, she also served as an adjunct instructor at IBM’s Software Quality Institute. She has held a number of technical management positions in systems software product development including IBM’s supercomputing platform, transitioning in the mid-nineties to the business side of IBM, initially in the server group OEM sales and later joining the IBM corporate IP group. In late 2003, Ms. Moore left IBM to join the Microsoft IP team.

Tatiana Kaptsan Moore holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics from Fordham University, course work towards a Bachelor of Music degree from Manhattan School of Music, and a Master of Science degree in Computer Science from Polytechnic Institute of New York University.  Ms. Moore is the President-Elect of LES USA-Canada.

Pamela Passman
Pamela Passman is President and CEO of the Center for Responsible Enterprise and Trade (CREATe.org), a non-profit dedicated to helping companies, their suppliers and business partners reduce counterfeiting, piracy, trade secret theft and corruption. Prior to founding CREATe.org in 2011, Passman was the Corporate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel, Global Corporate and Regulatory Affairs, Microsoft Corporation. Since 2002, Passman led Microsoft’s regulatory compliance work in more than 100 countries. She worked to advance Microsoft’s businesses in China and other emerging markets; led Microsoft’s public policy and philanthropic work; and had leadership responsibilities for Microsoft’s cross-company global corporate citizenship efforts.  She joined Microsoft in 1996 and until 2002, led the Legal and Corporate Affairs organization in the Far East, based in Tokyo, with a focus on Japan, Korea and the People’s Republic of China. Prior to joining Microsoft, Ms. Passman practiced law with Covington & Burling in Washington, D.C. and Nagashima & Ohno in Tokyo, Japan

Teresa Stanek Rea
Teresa Stanek Rea is Acting Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. In this role since February 2013, she advises President Obama, the Secretary of Commerce, and the administration on intellectual property matters.

Ms. Rea directs an office that provides incentives to encourage technological advancement and helps businesses protect their investments, promote their goods and services, and safeguard against deception in the marketplace. 

Ms. Rea joined the USPTO in 2011 as Deputy Director. She is a leading attorney in the field of intellectual property with more than 25 years of legal experience and a past president of the American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA). Before joining the USPTO, Ms. Rea was a partner in Crowell & Moring LLP’s Washington, D.C., office where she focused on intellectual property and dispute resolution related to pharmaceutical, biotechnology and other life science issues. Ms. Rea has experience in drafting infringement and validity opinions, as well as experience in interference and licensing matters.

Ms. Rea also worked for Ethyl Corporation from 1980 through 1984 and for patent boutique firm Burns, Doane, Swecker & Mathis in Alexandria, Va.

Ms. Rea is a member of many technical and legal associations and has been a frequent lecturer and publisher on patent topics including biotechnology, nanotechnology, licensing, technology transfer, patent practice, export control and interferences.

Ms. Rea received a Juris Doctor degree from Wayne State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in pharmacy from the University of Michigan.

Charlotte Rutherford
Charlotte Rutherford is Deputy General Counsel for Intellectual Property at Schlumberger which is a Global 500 company in the oil field service industry. She has managed and marketed IP portfolios; managed complex litigation; performed due diligence and negotiated international transactions such as strategic alliances, asset and technology transfers, divestitures and joint ventures. Prior to joining Schlumberger, Charlotte was Vice President Associate General Counsel for Colgate-Palmolive, Chief Intellectual Property Counsel of Conoco, General Counsel for Honeywell’s Electronic Materials business and Managing IP Partner for the a major law firm.

Charlotte received her J.D. from Loyola University, her Executive MBA with a concentration in finance from Rutgers University, and BS and MS in Engineering from Auburn University. She is licensed to practice law in both common law and civil law jurisdictions and is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Charlotte is a frequently featured speaker at conferences and has authored many publications. Her articles have appeared in The National Law Journal, The Journal of World Intellectual Property, and the Congressional Report (31 August 2000). She has been recognized as an expert concerning willfulness in intellectual property litigation by the U.S. District Court in Oxford Gene Technology Limited v. Mergen Ltd., 345 F.Supp.2d 431, (D.Del. 2004) and has provided expert testimony on several other pharmaceutical and medical device cases.

Marc A. Schwartz
Graduated with joint MBA-Finance and Juris Doctor degrees in 1988 from Hofstra University in New York.
Started career working with Intellectual Property boutique handling licensing deals in trademark, trade dress, copyright and patent, as well as infringement litigation in all areas.

After 5 years in practice, went in-house as IP counsel with Bob Mackie corporate in New York and Los Angeles. Created formal licensing business for Bob Mackie, expanding branded product into home furnishings ( furniture, rugs, lighting fixtures, bedding), luggage, artwork, fragrance, collectible Barbie dolls, and women's sportswear and jewelry with QVC television network. QVC, Mattel-Barbie and fragrance deals are over 20 years old, a rarity in consumer product licensing.

Structured buyout of equity partners through innovative funding utilizing Bob Mackie IP (trademarks and copyrights), as well as original Bob Mackie art and fashion/costume archives. Became Chief Operating Officer and Principal after buyout in 1997.

Paul A. Stewart
Paul A. Stewart is the Managing Director of PASCO Ventures LLC, a firm that he founded to help a select group of clients in the USA – and around the world – with deal strategy, negotiations and completion. 

Stewart retired from Eli Lilly and Company (Lilly) in October 2012; for over 20 years of his 25-year career at Lilly, Paul served in various deal leadership roles including:  crop protection (agrichemicals); medical devices / vascular intervention (cardiology and urology); drug infusion (hospital intravenous pumps, plus vital signs measurement products); corporate mergers, acquisitions and divestitures; and in the $2B+ Elanco Animal Health division (animal health & human food safety).  Other portions of Stewart’s career at Lilly included work in sales, sales management, sales training and market research. 

Stewart has done deals on all continents except Antarctica; he has been in 32 countries outside the USA and in 51 of the 52 U.S. states and territories.  There are over a dozen publicly-disclosed in-development or marketed human pharmaceuticals, medical devices and animal health products that exist today as a result of deals Stewart has done; that does not count a number of still-undisclosed new products that will be launched over the next few years. 

He currently serves as President & Chair of the Board of Governors of the Certified Licensing Professionals organization, and on the Advisory Board of DePauw University’s Management Fellows Program; he is a distinguished lecturer for the Graduate Program of International Pharmaceutical Engineering Management (IPEM) at Peking University in Beijing, China.  He is an elder at Second Presbyterian Church in Indianapolis; has served as a director of the Indianapolis Legal Aid Society (from 2004-2010); has served as president of the Board of Airport Commissioners for Greensburg-Decatur County (Indiana) (1980-81 and 1983) and the Indiana Seed Trade Association (1984); as chairman of the IVAC (1993) and Elanco (1999 and 2007) United Way campaigns; and as a member of the Board of Directors and Trusteeship (executive) Committee of Park Tudor School in Indianapolis (from 1997-2003) and the Board of Directors of the Harvard Business School Alumni Association (from 1999-2003).

Stewart is a Certified Licensing Professional, is listed in “Who’s Who in America,” “Who’s Who in the World” and “Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare,” and is the author of “A Harvard MBA’s Advice to His Sons” (ISBN 1594539952).

Stewart received a Bachelor of Science degree in agricultural business management in 1976 from Purdue University, and a master of business administration degree from Harvard University School of Business in 1987.  Stewart and his wife, Susan reside in Indianapolis, Indiana; they are the parents of two grown sons.
