Leverage, Reward, and Model: The Journey toward Commercialization

Katherina Holzhauser, AVP IS Strategy, Innovation, & Commercialization, Intermountain Healthcare

DESCRIPTION Healthcare organizations have collected large numbers of internal assets — tools, processes, and data. These internal assets can have large impacts on industry improvements either through changes in care process or cost reduction. How do organizations leverage these internal assets and take them to market? Through a culture of "intrepreneurship" — turning internal ideas into profitable finished products—organizations can establish external‐facing business models that allow their internal assets' values to be fully recognized.

In 2011, Intermountain Healthcare embarked on a journey to leverage our internal assets to develop market‐facing products and services that support our not‐for‐profit vision to be a model healthcare system by delivering extraordinary care and superior service at an affordable cost. We partnered with an established professional services organization to develop some of these offerings. Throughout the journey, we discovered operational gaps and areas that needed modification to accommodate an external‐facing business model.
