Panelists:

Scott Simmonds, Partner, Barnes & Thornburg (Moderator)

Scott works with business clients to identify the strengths, weaknesses and opportunities of their inventions, create significant and enforceable patent properties, and maximize revenue-generating initiatives designed to monetize IP. Scott spent more than a decade as an engineer and manager working in the design and manufacture of medical devices and patient-handling equipment. As a result, he offers multidimensional business experience that ranges from planning and development to budgeting and staffing. His business experience and education help him to understand client concerns from their distinct perspective. Scott currently serves as Patent Practice Leader of the firm’s IP group, a team of 80+ attorneys.

Kenneth Gandy, Partner, Woodard Emhardt

Ken advises clients in all areas of intellectual property law with an emphasis in patent matters, and infringement and validity evaluations in chemical, pharmaceutical, biotechnological and medical device arts. With a focus on intellectual property prosecution, counseling, licensing and litigation-related issues, Ken’s extensive experience includes matters involving worldwide portfolio management, diligence in licensing and acquisition, US interferences, US reissues, US reexaminations and IPRs, managing and coordinating EP oppositions with US interests, clearance opinions, and infringement opinions. Ken also frequently advises on provisions for IP management in joint development, supply, distribution, consulting and employment agreements.

John Stankewicz, Rolls Royce

John Stankiewicz has been IP Counsel with Rolls-Royce since 2016.  Prior to joining Rolls-Royce John practiced for 10 years supporting Caterpillar Inc. as Corporate Counsel and as an Associate with Cantor Colburn LLP in their Hartford, Connecticut office.  John has a J.D. from the College of William and Mary, where he interned with the NASA Langley Research Center, and a B.S. from the Ohio State University where he double majored in Physics and Astrophysics.  In his time away from the office John enjoys hiking with wife Lauren, making homebrew beer, and flying his 1973 Grumman Tiger.
