LES Seattle Chapter presents:
The Music Industry - Digital Change and Intellectual Property
David Kaefer from Spotify presents
The music industry has undergone a significant transformation over the past twenty years. In this session, we will explore how the industry transformed from physical sales to digital downloads and now to digital streaming. Each of these transformations impacted the way intellectual property is licensed, causing shifts in economic models and the way different parties exchange rights. We will define and discuss the role various types of right play in the music industry today, including rights for sound recordings, performance rights, mechanical rights, sync rights and rights for videos and lyrics. We will touch on statutory licensing regimes and identify risk sharing mechanisms that help companies do business in countries where clear IP ownership is difficult or impossible to identify.
