With the growth of statewide legalization of marijuana and other cannabis based products around the country, patrons, producers, innovators, and executives alike in cannabis related fields are unsure of the risks and the returns of investments in the cannabis industry. The first event of 2019 from the San Diego Chapter of LES will focus on a variety of legal issues, such as intellectual property (patents and trademarks), licensing, regulations, criminal laws, and federal/state law conflicts, pertaining to cannabis, cannabis based products, research, innovation, investment and innovation in cannabis, and more. Come for networking and socializing, and then stay to hear a great panel of guests discuss the legal landscape in this growing era of cannabis. Drinks and hors d'oeuvres will be served!

Dr. Dale Hunt – Plant Scientist and Patent Attorney, Plant & Planet Law Firm
Dr. Dale Hunt is a plant scientist, a Cannabis lawyer and registered U.S. patent attorney with over 20 years of experience protecting plant varieties in the United States and throughout the world. Dr. Hunt is on the board of directors of the Open Cannabis Project (opencannabisproject.org) and is the founder of Plant & Planet Law Firm (PlantAndPlanet.com). Dr. Hunt also created and maintains MJPatentsWeekly.com, a website which is updated weekly, with over 10,000 Cannabis-related patents and patent applications from the US and Canada, as well as international applications published under the Patent Cooperation Treaty.
Jessica McElfresh - Attorney, McElfresh Law, Inc.
Ms. Jessica McElfresh has focused on cannabis law and policy since 2010. She represents cannabis retailers, distributors, cultivators, manufacturers, and testing labs, as well as landlords and ancillary businesses, currently focusing on local and state applications, regulations, and compliance. Ms. McElfresh has guided clients through successful applications in various jurisdictions around California. Ms. McElfresh also advocates for cannabis and broader drug policy reform. She serves as a board member and legal counsel for the Association of Cannabis Professionals, a cannabis trade association based in San Diego and has served as a consultant for the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation of Northern California about how Proposition 64 affects criminal justice reform and individual rights.
David Branfman - Attorney, Branfman Law Group, P.C.
Mr. Branfman has been practicing law in San Diego County for over thirty years. Mr. Branfman’s practice focuses on intellectual property and entertainment law, including trademarks, domain names, copyrights, trade secrets, licensing, motion pictures & TV, and music. He has also developed a leading specialty in the intersection between intellectual property law and the growing medical and recreational marijuana industries and speaks regularly on this subject. He is an instructor on intellectual property law at the UCSD (University of California, San Diego) Executive Perspective for Scientists & Engineers program. Mr. Branfman is a member of the NORML Legal Committee and the California Cannabis Industry Association (CCIA) and has spoken several times at NORML Legal Committee conferences.
