Description:

IP valuations are critical to pre-deal decision-making and deal structuring, as well as for post-deal financial reporting, tax planning, transfer pricing, corporate restructuring, and R&D prioritization.  Within the life sciences industry, these valuations can be quite challenging given the complex transaction structures and the need to quantify risks, capture future options, and provide credible results that withstand stakeholder and regulatory reviews.  We will discuss how to select appropriate valuation approaches, tailor them to the specific situation, and address the nuances properly to ensure that there is rigorous valuation support for life sciences IP transactions.

Rick G. Schwartz 
Managing Director, Duff and Phelps, Strategic Value Advisory 

Rick G. Schwartz is a Managing Director in Duff & Phelps’ Strategic Value Advisory practice, based in the Silicon Valley office.  For more than 30 years he has focused on valuations for Pharmaceutical, Biotech, Device, Healthcare, and Technology companies.  Areas of expertise include developing financial projections and valuing early stage businesses, contingent assets and liabilities, collaboration and partnership arrangements, and licensing deals with acquisition options.  Rick has a Ph.D. in Engineering-Economic Systems from Stanford University, and a B.S. in Civil Engineering and B.A. in Government from Cornell University.


 

Gary J. Raichart
Director, Duff and Phelps, Strategic Value Advisory

Gary J. Raichart is a Director in Duff & Phelps’ Strategic Value Advisory practice, based in San Diego.  Gary has over a dozen years of consulting experience focusing on analyses of value, risk, and uncertainty, with specific expertise in valuing licensing, royalty and research collaboration agreements for pre-launch products in highly uncertain markets for transaction, financial planning, reorganizational, and tax planning purposes.  He has estimated the value of hundreds of contingent consideration arrangements, assets, business opportunities, contractual obligations, and transactions that involve substantial uncertainty, including early-stage IP, patent portfolios, guarantees, warranty obligations, employee stock options, earn-outs, and other contingencies.  Gary is also experienced in developing financial projections for new products and businesses, IP strategy analysis, and R&D investment prioritization.  Gary received his M.S. in Management Science and Engineering and his B.S in Mathematical and Computational Science from Stanford University.
