From the Font Wars to OpenType - Si Daniels will give a very brief history of type at Microsoft. Si will explain how Microsoft originally got into the font business, and emerged as a leader in typography, type technology and font licensing.
What The Font? Font Licensing 101 - Phil Carey-Bergren and Steve Kuhlman will explain the History of Type, New use cases, Copyrights and Trademarks, and Infringement/Enforcement.

Si Daniels, Program Manager, Office Design, Microsoft, joined Microsoft’s typography group in 1995 and has worked in the field of fonts, font technology and font licensing in both the Windows and Office divisions. He’s currently part of the Office Design team, managing font and typography related projects.
|Phil Carey-Bergen, Monotype Imaging
Phil Carey-Bergren, Senior Corporate & IP Counsel at Monotype Imaging, has been with Monotype for over 9 years focusing on IP and Copyright Infringement. Phil has an undergraduate degree in Political Science from North Central College and graduated from DePaul University College of Law.
Steve Kuhlman, Monotype Imaging
Steve Kuhlman is Senior Director of OEM Sales at Monotype Imaging. Steve joined Monotype in 1990 and has been involved in a variety of activities during that time including leading sales and marketing teams, managing business units and developing new license models. Currently he is working with Monotype’s strategic partners.
