Program:

At LES Michigan’s 2nd Annual Intellectual Property and Licensing Symposium, a prominent panel of in-house counsel will address Leading Business Strategies for Changing Times.  Topics will include:

Andrew ("Jake") Grove, Howard & Howard
Shareholder

Jake Grove will serve as moderator for the panel.  As a shareholder at Howard & Howard, Mr. Grove guides clients through litigation when necessary, and he has served as lead counsel in dozens of successful intellectual property cases. He also guides clients away from litigation with thoughtful clearance and design-around opinions. In doing so, he draws upon his experience preparing and prosecuting patent applications in mechanical and electro-mechanical technologies.

Mr. Grove received his J.D. from Wayne State University Law School in 1993 and his M.A. from the University of Chicago in 1989. He earned both his B.A., with high honors, and B.S., cum laude, from the University of Michigan in 1988. Mr. Grove is licensed in the State of Michigan and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. Court of Appeals for both the Federal and Sixth Circuits and the U.S. District Court for both the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan.

Mr. Grove is a co-author of an American Casebook Series, 6th Edition book, Cases and Materials on Patent Law, Including Trade Secrets, Copyrights, Trademarks. He is also the co-author of an upcoming book from AIPLA/BNA entitled, Evidence in Patent Litigation. Mr. Grove has also been a professor of Trademark Law and Unfair Competition at the University of Detroit Mercy Law School since 2008.

 

William Cosnowski, Jr., ZF Group
Vice President, Chief IP Counsel, & Head of Intellectual Property

In 2017, William Cosnowski Jr. became Vice President, Chief IP Counsel, & Head of Intellectual Property at ZF.  Prior to joining ZF, Mr. Cosnowski was the lead in-house attorney for technology and intellectual property litigation at Delphi Automotive Systems, LLC. He focused on the worldwide defense of intellectual property and warranty claims asserted against Delphi and its customers. Mr. Cosnowski successfully led the company's efforts to defeat contingent liability claims exceeding $600 million. In support of Delphi's on-going business operations, Mr. Cosnowski served as divisional counsel for Delphi's Electronic and Safety Division, where he directed the division's day-to-day legal affairs covering a wide range of commercial, transactional, and litigation matters. He also directed the company's technology licensing and litigation initiative focused on generating value from Delphi's worldwide patent portfolio of over 5000 patents.  Crain's Detroit Business Magazine recognized him as one of southeastern Michigan's upcoming business leaders as a member of its "40 Under 40 Class of 2009." Mr. Cosnowski has served as a council member of the Information Technology Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan. Prior to working for Delphi, Mr. Cosnowski worked for Rader, Fishman, and Grauer PLLC (now “Fishman Stewart PLLC”), focusing on intellectual property matters. With prior education in industrial, operations, and environmental engineering, Mr. Cosnowski earned his law degree from the University of Michigan. 
 
Dalpreet Saluja, Visteon Corporation
Associate General Counsel & Chief IP Counsel

 

Dalpreet Saluja is Associate General Counsel and Chief IP Counsel of Visteon, a Michigan based tier-1 supplier of automotive cockpit electronics and connected car solutions.  Dalpreet has substantial legal experience in the automotive industry – early on as a patent prosecutor at the largest IP boutique in Michigan, handling the global infotainment patent portfolio for an OEM in the early days of this technology, and later as Counsel for a global automotive and audio company where he served in various IP roles, including as regional head of IP in Europe, and Division Counsel managing the Division’s global legal affairs.  In his role as Chief IP Counsel at Visteon, he oversees a global patent portfolio of nearly 3,000 patents and applications and has global responsibility for IP transactions, litigation, open source, product counseling and trademarks.  He graduated from Case Western Reserve University School of Law, lives in Ann Arbor with his wife and three children, and is a native of Baltimore, Maryland.        

Kendra Mattison, Koch Industries
Chief IP Counsel

 

Kendra Mattison is Chief IP Counsel, responsible for IP-related matters for Koch companies worldwide. She was previously Chief IP Counsel and Assistant General Counsel for Guardian Industries, now a wholly owned subsidiary of Koch. Prior to that, Ms. Mattison spent four years at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett and Dunner in Washington, D.C., where she focused on pharmaceutical patent litigation. Before starting her legal career, she worked for BASF in Wyandotte, Michigan, with roles in engineering, research, and environmental. Ms. Mattison is registered to practice in Michigan, Virginia, and Washington, D.C, and is a registered patent attorney. She currently serves as chair-elect for the Intellectual Property Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan.  


John Cheek, Tenneco

Associate General Counsel & Chief IP Counsel
 

John Cheek is Associate General Counsel and Chief IP Counsel for Fortune 500 company Tenneco Inc., a leading designer, manufacturer, and distributor of clean air and ride performance products and systems for the automotive, commercial truck, and off-highway markets and the aftermarket. Before joining Tenneco, Mr. Cheek was deputy IP counsel and senior corporate counsel at Caterpillar Inc. From 2010 to 2017, he served as a director and vice president of Prairie State Legal Services. He has an undergraduate degree in mathematics and economics from Wabash College, a JD from the University of Dayton, and an MBA from the University of Chicago’s Booth School of Business. He is a regular lecturer on IP strategy and management at Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management. Mr. Cheek serves on the executive committee of the Association of Corporate Patent Counsel, and on the Intellectual Property Owners Association’s board of directors.  Since joining Tenneco in January 2017, Cheek has been streamlining the company’s patenting processes to better align its IP strategy with its overall business strategy.  Cheek and his team provide more than legal guidance; they create and manage a portfolio of business assets for the company, and in order to do that, they determine how the assets provide investment return for the company.
