This one-day course provides an overview of the basics of intellectual property (IP) and licensing. It builds a practical understanding of core IP and licensing concepts from both the business and legal perspectives. Each topic, taught by both legal and business experts working as a team, is divided into five sections with examples, exercises, and interactions between instructors and fellow students. Topics include an introduction to IP, the basics of IP commercialization and licensing, determining reasonable license fees and royalty rates, managing risks, and a licensing case study. Joe is a patent litigator and licensed patent attorney with intellectual property experience in patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret matters.  He is recognized as a leading patent practitioner, including inclusion in the IAM Patent 1000 (publication of the world’s leading patent attorneys) and designated an “IP Star” by the Managing IP publication.  Joe is a frequent author and speaker on a variety of IP topics including licensing, IP litigation, IP monetization, and ethics.

Joe is also a leader in Wisconsin's legal, intellectual property, and education communities. Joe was appointed by Governor Scott Walker, and confirmed by the Wisconsin Senate, to serve on the Wisconsin State Public Defender Board, which provides oversight of the State Public Defender's Office. Joe also is the Statewide Leadership Chair for Project Lead The Way – Wisconsin, among the largest k-12 science, technology, engineering, and math (“STEM”) programs in the United States.  He is also a Past-President of the Wisconsin Intellectual Property Law Association and serves on the leadership of the Wisconsin chapter of the Licensing Executives Society.   

Joe earned his B.S. in Civil Engineering from Marquette University and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Marquette University Law School.


Karen Temple, Commercialization Manager

University of Toronto

Karen Temple provides over 15 years of experience in business development and technology commercialization. Prior to joining the University of Toronto as a Commercialization Manager, Karen worked for both large and small companies in technology and business development roles. Her product development experience and market segmentation strategies have repeatedly resulted in faster development and client acquisitions times.  At the University, she works with researchers looking to bring their technologies to market.  Clients repeatedly value her focus in driving technology development, securing necessary resources as well as her ability to facilitate and negotiate partnering opportunities, including structuring licensing deals, with a wide variety of companies operating in variety of sectors.  Karen volunteers as the Chair Education for the Toronto Chapter and serves as Instructor Chair for the Licensing Executive Society (LES) USA and Canada.

The Toronto chapter uses online registration for members and non-members and accepts payment by credit card.  Members should login to the registration page with their LES online account.
