The event will give attendees critical lessons from our panel of leading legal experts and successful startup founders about bringing machine learning and AI-implemented technology solutions to market, including about: intellectual property protection, acquiring data, licensing data and models, and privacy law compliance.

The event will be a panel event, with a lunch included. Two lawyers will help canvas the issues that machine learning and AI companies will encounter as they grow from seed to eventually getting acquired. Three successful startup founders will then tell their stories to round out the session and give critical business insight into the challenges. There will also be a question period.

Panel of legal experts and startup founders including:
• Mark Penner from Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP
• Vanessa Grant from Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP
• Jane Wang (CEO, Optimity)
• Sasha Kucharczyk (Co-founder, Preteckt)
• Chris Buttenham (CEO and Founder, Obie.ai)

Speakers bios:
Mark Penner is an intellectual property lawyer with Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP’s Technology and Intellectual Property practice groups. Mark’s practice focuses on all aspects of the acquisition, protection, enforcement and strategic use of a wide range of intellectual property assets in Canada and around the world. He acts for a range of clients, from individual inventors, start-ups and other early stage companies to large multinational companies, and is actively involved in counselling clients and providing strategic advice in a variety of technology areas, including biotechnology, chemistry, energy (mining, oil and gas), social media, insurance, communications and digital marketing. While focusing on biotechnology and other life sciences, “… his deep knowledge base enables him to handle matters across a range of disciplines with aplomb” (IAM Patent 1000 – The World’s Leading Patent Practitioners for Patent Prosecution, 2012). Mark speaks and writes extensively on all aspects of intellectual property rights, particularly the commercialization of IP rights for start-ups as well as commercial matters for companies with respect to IP rights in national, cross-border and multinational commercial transactions.  Mark has been sought after by national and international media as a commentator on IP matters.

Vanessa Grant is a partner at Norton Rose Fulbright Canada LLP whose expertise relates to corporate strategy, mergers and acquisitions, licensing and financing. Vanessa is also very knowledgeable about IP commercial issues. She works for a range of clients (including investment firms, purchasers of tech companies, vendors of tech companies, institutions and scaling companies).

Jane Wang and Optimity: Optimity is a digital health technology company that helps insurers and employers engage their population in proactive health risk management using positive daily micro-interactions delivered by mobile and wearables. Prior to Optimity, Jane spent 8 years as a risk specialist in clinical research, specializing in preventing adverse events and death on clinical trials. Now her team is applying the same science and process to proactively address health risk, quality of life and longevity

Sasha Kucharczyk and Preteckt: Sasha is the Co-Founder and COO of Preteckt Inc.  He is on a mission to eliminate the stress and surprises in the vehicle owning and operating experiences.  Prior to starting Preteckt, Sasha worked in various engineering and marketing positions for companies that were using data to solve problems.

Chris Buttenham and Obie.ai: Chris Buttenham is the Founder & CEO of Obie.ai, a company changing the way teams share knowledge with their virtual assistant, Obie. Chris got into the tech space magically. No really, he performed magic professionally at a young age and gravitated towards the digital space to promote himself. By the age of 15 Chris registered his first business that provided digital marketing for other entertainers and small businesses. A self-proclaimed serial entrepreneur and hustler, Chris is passionate about technology and specifically how conversation will change the way we look at software.
