Best Practices of Valuation of IP Technology

Expert valuation speaker followed by panel discussion on various valuation topics impacting IP owners in the university and corporate settings (lunch provided)



A networking luncheon will kick-off the second Iowa LES Chapter event. A valuation expert will present on common valuation techniques, terms of art and the role of valuation in various stages of IP ownership (from mergers and acquisitions to IPO, licensing, technology transfer and litigation). The event will culminate with a panel discussion on best practices of valuation of IP technology in both university and corporate settings. Panelists will discuss topics including how IP valuation has been conducted within their offices/companies, challenges they have encountered and best practices employed. Time for questions and answers will be provided to maximize interaction with the panelists.

Zach Eubank, RSM

Zach Eubank is a consultant and business advisor to Iowa, Nebraska and Minnesota businesses on financial and management projects, business planning and projections, and business valuations. He has performed appraisals for a variety of purposes including: ESOPs, mergers/acquisitions, estate taxes, buy/sell agreements, intra-family transfers/gifting, charitable donations, built-in gains calculations, management decision-making, family limited partnerships, asset holding companies and financial reporting. His background includes building financial models, applying valuation techniques, performing financial analysis and writing conclusive reports. Zach has also provided expert testimony and damage calculations related to complex commercial litigation, lost profits, commercial damages, business disputes and valuation disputes.


John Ford, Pioneer


John Ford is a Chartered Professional Accountant and Six Sigma Black Belt who has worked for the DuPont company for over 25 years. Throughout his career in finance he has worked with cross functional teams to bring scientific discovery to the marketplace in many different industries. His current focus is on licensing and mergers and acquisitions in the agriculture industry with DuPont Pioneer. John lives in Toronto, Canada and is a part-time Professor of Business Strategy at Humber College.






Brad Powers, NewLink Genetics

Brad Powers is the Chief Compliance Officer and Senior Legal Counsel for Newlink Genetics. Throughout his career, Brad has worked as both internal general counsel and external IP counsel. Brad’s experience has allowed him to manage IP portfolios, counsel senior management on transactional matters, and advise on IP acquisition, protection and enforcement. Brad is an Iowa State University alumni with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology and a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. He then studied law at Drake University in Des Moines. 


  Craig Forney, Iowa State University

Craig Forney is a Senior Commercialization Manager at Iowa State University. Craig focuses on technology evaluation and licensing in the chemistry and material science-related research areas. He earned his bachelors and doctoral degrees in Chemical Engineering from Iowa State University. Craig then worked in the private sector for nearly twenty years in a variety of sales, product development, and operational roles before returning to Iowa State in 2012 to join the Office of Intellectual Property and Technology Transfer.
