One Health: Improving Health Care for Humans, Animals, and the Environments

Posted By Administrator, Wednesday, April 12, 2017

The LES NJ chapter celebrated World IP Day with a presentation of One Health, a new and evolving field about the link between human, animal, and environmental health.  Our guest speakers, Dr. Greg Summers and Dr. Laura Kahn provided their insights on unique aspects of the Animal Health business and the ancient concept of applying discoveries in animal health therapies to advance therapeutic solutions for human health.  This approach is currently the forefront subject of investigations, especially in treating bacterial resistance.

Dr. Greg Summers, a veterinarian by training and former director of World Wide Business Development of Merck Animal Health Division presented an overall perspective of the Animal health business including the regulatory process for drug approvals and key drivers for the product portfolio selection process.

Dr. Laura Kahn, a physician and research scholar with the Program on Science and Global Security at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University, introduced the concept of how Animal Health is playing a critical role in enhancing understanding of zoonosis, comparative, and translational medicine. Dr. Kahn presented the results of her investigations about bacterial resistance and the use of bacteriophages as the promising solution for the treatment of bacterial infections.

The program offered a comprehensive view of the use of translation/comparative medicine, the study of disease processes across species, and the importance of investigating the planet’s biome and humans' microbiomes to fully understand the microbial role in health and disease.

Dr Kahn is the author of One Health and the Politics of Antimicrobial Resistance available at www.press.jhu.edu*.

Special thanks to Dr. Lalit Gaur, Head of Global Business Development and Licensing for Vetoquinol, for the coordination and development of this program.
