Welcome to the Industry-University-Government Interface Sector!

The Industry University Government Interface (IUGI) Sector promotes interaction, collaboration, and best-practice sharing between licensing and technology transfer professionals and the greater financial community.

Welcome from the IUGI Sector Chair

Does your IP, licensing, or business development job require interaction between Industry, University (non-profit), and/or government organizations? Are you interested in improving your skills and better understanding how your colleagues and peers develop and manage their licensing strategy? Would you like to develop new tools to work more efficiently with your IUG colleagues? Do you have ideas on how to create an effective interface between these functionally different players? If so, then you have come to the right place! We need your expertise, wisdom, and helping hands to make our Sector strong, vibrant, and relevant.

The IUGI Sector is LES's group with the broadest reach and focus. The reason is simple: the organizations in these three categories represent the key stakeholders in licensing and IP management. The sector participants recognize that they must work together to understand each other's goals and needs to make licensing deals happen and drive impactful outcomes. Many of us – despite our best intentions – discover that as part of one group we don't necessarily know enough about the other two groups to optimize our collaborations with them. The IUGI Sector is all about learning from each other to determine what works and what doesn't work.

This year, our focus will be on building from what was accomplished in prior years and on developing strategies to meet the challenges of the LES2020 goals. We intend to expand the IUGI Sector with more networking amongst ourselves and with other LES Sectors, with the Industry-University-Government Transactions Professional Committee of LES International and with the other professional societies and organizations that develop tools to facilitate IUG networks. We will provide more leadership opportunities for our sector members, particularly in light of the five-year strategy of member growth, engagement, and retention.

We will also keep helpful resources easily accessible via the IUGI Sector website. We would like to continue highlighting specific outcomes from the IUGI Sector as you, our sector members, inform us of when and how you connect with a new opportunity or license as a result of something the IUGI Sector or LES is doing well. Those wins deserve mention and celebration! These activities are what adds value – and is probably why you continue to be a member of LES. We want the IUGI Sector activities to be as meaningful to you as possible.

As a sector within LES, IUGI crosscuts across all of the organization. For example, we find ourselves networking closely with other LES sectors such as High-Tech, Life Sciences, Consumer Products, and Chemicals, Energy, Environmental and Materials (CEEM), as well as various special interest groups such as Cleantech Cross Sector, Licensing Office Structure & Management, and Women in Licensing. This type of networking is a natural part of doing business today and we encourage you to use your LES membership in this way.

As you look for outlets on which to focus your volunteer and training efforts within LES, consider what you might learn from and offer to the IUGI Sector. If you'd like more information, please don't hesitate to either contact me or any of our other IUGI Sector Leadership Committee members.

We look forward to hearing from you!
