This presentation develops a practical procedure for patent valuation using the market approach. First the economic issues with this approach generally and those arising from its application to patent valuation specifically will be discussed. Then some insights into the pricing behavior of patent portfolio transactions will be revealed in an effort to lay an empirical foundation for the proposed method. Finally, a three-step valuation method under the market approach for patent portfolio valuation will be presented.
