The Business Success Summit

Morning Presentation: IP on the Back of a Napkin - Basics for Business Success: This break-out session will outline what the big steps are for business success, from idea to product/service launch, with interactive, small, group discussions that will explore what to do and what to avoid. Learn about how a real (if simple) plan and a common sense approach to moving forward tends to lead to greater success.

It will start with the assumption that you have an idea for a new product or a business. Next, through practical examples, we will show you the basic steps to take in naming and protecting this new product. You will then be involved in a hands-on discussion so that you have a walk-through understanding of different kinds of intellectual property, such as a tradename, trademark, copyright, and patent, and how they can be useful in business.

Register for the morning presentation at: http://www.newbizsummit.com/

$75 for all morning events, this does not include the afternoon presentation.

Afternoon Presentation, 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm: Top 10 Things You Need to Know about Competitive Intelligence (Add-on 2-hour workshop):
Competitive Intelligence is essential for understanding a new or continuing market opportunity (if there are no competitors, it means you will have to create/develop the market).

The most important factor in a successful, competitive, intelligence project is linking the understanding of market forces to specific business decisions. Without a decision - or the commitment to make a decision - it is very easy to spend time, money, and resources to do the work, gather the data, and do the analysis, without generating any business value. It is more than a simple Internet search. It involves understanding the use of databases, including the various patent databases, as well as open literature. It involves talking - and, more important, listening - to people. Once the data is collected, it is time for the toughest part - thoughtful analysis to answer the questions driving competitive actions and reactions.

We will not have time to develop skill sets in depth in this session, but we hope it will raise awareness of the critical importance of understanding your competition, and encourage you to learn more about its value and how to make better decisions. After a short introduction/review of the Top 10 Principles of competitive intelligence, the attendees will select at least five topics to pursue in small group exercises.

Note: In 2016, LES Wisconsin plans to offer a two-day hands-on, competitive intelligence course, which will provide access to some patent searching tools, as well as other tools. It will allow attendees the time and guidance to evaluate the tool or tools that work for them and gain proficiency in the process. The exact date and place is to be determined. LES is a volunteer organization. All expert presenters are volunteers.
