A discussion of the current trends in IP monetization strategy. The discussion will focus on three key areas for monetization: investing, collaborating, and litigating. The panelists will examine the decision-making process, looking at key aspects that influence the decision process. The panel brings together three different viewpoints on this topic, which provide insight from different industries, as well as both buyer and seller perspectives.

Brian Cody, Senior Business Development Director at Velocys, Inc.
Mr. Cody has over 30 years of experience in the energy industry, primarily in the midstream sector. He has held executive positions in commercial, finance, and operations. Brian currently serves as Senior Business Development Director for Velocys, a company that is pioneering a new industry: the distributed production of fuels and chemicals through smaller scale gas-to-liquid (GTL). Mr. Cody helped establish Velocys’ new office in Houston which acts as the commercial and engineering center for the company.
Systems based on Velocys' technology are significantly smaller than those using conventional technology, enabling modular plants that can be deployed cost-effectively in remote locations and on smaller fields than is possible with competing systems. Together with world-class partners, Velocys provides complete smaller scale GTL solutions that address an untapped market of up to 25 million barrels of fuel a day.
Mr. Cody holds a B.S. in Accounting from Indiana University, a M.B.A. from the University of Texas at Dallas, and is a Certified Public Accountant.
Abha Divine, Co-Founder and Managing Director, Techquity Capital Management, LLC
Ms. Divine is a Co-Founder of Techquity Capital Management, LLC, an IP investment firm devoted to unlocking value from innovation. Techquity invests through a variety of deal structures, from acquisition of assets to structured financing for IP rich firms. Before Techquity, Ms. Divine launched AT&T Knowledge Ventures (KV), overseeing the worldwide IP portfolio for the AT&T family of companies. As president and chief executive officer, she led the organization to deliver measurable earnings-per-share impact annually and established AT&T KV as one of the leading producers of IP assets and revenue in its industry.
Previously, as SBC’s vice president of corporate strategy, Ms. Divine was responsible for the creation of SBC’s data networking, managed services and hosting businesses, as well as the restructuring of its consumer broadband strategy to achieve SBC’s broadband leadership position. In this role she led a team in defining and executing acquisitions, strategic alliances and buy-outs required for success in key growth areas.
Ms. Divine earned an M.B.A. from the University of Texas, an M.S.E.E. from MIT and holds bachelor’s degrees in electrical engineering and applied mathematics from Southern Methodist University. She also sits on the board of the Bobby Lyle School of Engineering at SMU and is a member of MIT’s Visiting Committee on Research.
Jeffery J. Sheldon, General Partner & Managing Director at Citare Tx Investment Partners
Mr. Sheldon is the General Partner & Managing Director/Founder of CitareTx Investment Partners, a medical device venture development, investment, and management company; Managing Director of CitareTx Management LLC, the venture fund management & operating company; Chairman & CEO/Founder of three CitareTx portfolio companies: EMIT Corporation, Houston Medical Robotics, Inc., and Coaugulex, Inc.; President & CEO of Yguana Entertainment, Inc.; and Houston Technology Center Board Director. Mr. Sheldon was also the Founder/Chairman & CEO of IDev Technologies, Inc. sold to Abbott in August 2013 for $310 Million; Founder/Chairman & CEO of Nittany Polymedics, Inc.; Director of Technology Development at MD Anderson Cancer Center; founder of the Technology Management Office at The University of Texas Medical Branch; and held various leadership positions at Rockwell International/Rockwell Space Operations Company. Mr. Sheldon holds a B.S. Aerospace Engineering & Mechanics, with distinction, from the University of Minnesota and a M.B.A. from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.
James D. Woods, Ph.D., Principal, BDO Consulting and Past Chair of LES Houston Chapter
For nearly 20 years, Dr. Woods has assisted clients with fraud investigations, valuation projects, economic impact studies, intellectual asset management, and litigation matters. His primary area of concentration has been on helping clients with issues relating to the value of intellectual property. He has provided expert testimony and reports concerning opinions related to damages and to opposing experts' damage models in numerous patent litigation cases. He is a Certified Fraud Examiner as well as a Certified Licensing Professional. Dr. Woods received his Ph.D. in Finance from Mays Business School at Texas A&M University, his M.B.A. from the University of Missouri, and his B.S.B.A. in Finance and Banking, Cum Laude, from Robert J. Trulaske, Sr. College of Business, University of Missouri.
