Current investment trends in the energy industry and venture capital approaches to energy investments in the Midwest
Everyone in Silicon Valley can tell you why we need that 102ND social sharing site that sells excess inventory because it leverages an Uber-like approach and is built on a disruptive machine-learning virtual cloud-based big-data platform. And, everyone can tell you a war story about someone who lost a bundle of money during the cleantech boom and bust or riding oil prices up and down.
Nonetheless, the energy industry remains a $6.1 trillion opportunity where global demographics drive ever increasing demand. It is an industry with major companies spread across the United States and deep roots anchored in the industrial Midwest, and it spends heavily on research. The energy industry is also a sleeping giant that has recently been awoken by the noise of new innovation impacting its future. Combined this creates a valuable, untapped opportunity.
We took into account this massive opportunity and the many hard lessons learned by others and created Energy Foundry, a new kind of energy VC fund. During this discussion Jason will review key energy industry drivers, how Chicago and the Midwest are blossoming into a global leader in energy innovation and how Energy Foundry is using a unique model to capture the opportunity that exist in early energy innovation.
