Following the release of proposed trademark regulations on February 10, 2018, join our panel in a discussion of major changes to trademark law and practice in Canada. Revisions since the draft trademark regulations released last year will be covered. Our panel will also share their insights on how to prepare for the changes.

Philip Lapin
Smart & Biggar

Philip Lapin is the Chair of Smart & Biggar's Trademark Operations Group and, with more than 20 years of experience, is recognized as one of Canada's leading trademark lawyers. He manages and provides strategic advice concerning the trademark portfolios for many Canadian and multinational corporations. Philip has handled the clearance, prosecution and registration of thousands of trademarks, with expertise in trademark opposition and cancellation proceedings before the Trademarks Office. He is also a frequent speaker and author on a wide variety of trademark-related topics and has taught trademark law as an adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa's engineering school for many years.

Jennifer McKay
Perley-Robertson, Hill & McDougall

Jennifer McKay is part of the Intellectual Property Group at Perley-Robertson, Hill & McDougall, dealing with both national and international trade-mark portfolios. Her extensive experience includes registration, licensing, opposition, litigation, availability opinions, transfers, domain names and summary cancellation proceedings. Jennifer’s professional background includes working with CIPO where she was actively involved with the development of trade-mark policy and practice. For a number of years, she was an adjunct professor at the University of Ottawa Faculty of Law and is currently an active member of a number of INTA and IPIC committees involved with the development of trade-mark legislation and practice. For the fifth consecutive year, Jennifer was recognized as a leading trade-mark lawyer by the World Trademark Review 1000.

Wendy Riel
Low Murchison Radnoff

Wendy Riel leads Low Murchison Radnoff’s Intellectual Property Law Group, assisting local, national and international clients in the selection, clearance, acquisition, prosecution and enforcement of trademarks in a wide variety of industries. She has also served as a Senior Examiner at the Canadian Trademarks Office. In addition, Wendy provides quality service in the areas of copyright registration, copyright enforcement, domain name acquisition, domain name registration, domain name disputes, marking requirements and labelling issues, counterfeit matters and licensing. She is a member of the IPIC Trademark Practice Committee, and a member of the INTA Trademark Office Practices Committee.

The LES Ottawa Chapter uses online registration for members and non-members and accepts payment by credit card.  Members should login to the registration page with their LES online account.


A $5.00 cancellation fee is applied to all refunds.  Cancellations are non-refundable after March 14th.  Substitutions will be accepted.  Contact LES at (703) 234-4058 for assistance.
