Program Description:

The differences between the patent laws in Europe and the U.S., although not great, do contain some subtleties that could cost inventors/companies/clients unnecessary costs and delay in prosecuting their patent applications there. With the rules and their interpretation shifting, it is important for patent attorneys to better understand the nature of those rules on behalf of their clients, and the differences between the U.S. style and European preferences. The speaker, an expert on the rules and frequent presenter worldwide on the topic, will provide the audience with practical tips to posture cases efficiently and cost-effectively.

Detlef von Ahsen is a managing partner with the IP Law Firm of KUHNEN & WACKER in Freising/Munich, Germany. 

He is a German and European Patent Attorney and a European Trademark and Design Attorney who is specialized in the fields of mechanical engineering (road and rail motor vehicles, ship building, internal combustion engines, agricultural engineering, construction/civil engineering), thermal and sound insulation technologies as well as electrical engineering, chemical and biological engineering. 

Detlef von Ahsen has also been involved in many trademark litigation cases and is a specialist on 3-D marks. His technical background makes him a valuable expert when it comes to assessing identity and/or similarity of goods and services in opposition cases.

He studied mechanical engineering and was awarded a master’s degree of Diplom-Ingenieur from the University of Darmstadt. 

Prior to joining KUHNEN & WACKER, Detlef von Ahsen worked as a patent attorney with his own law firm and as a product engineer with Baker Hughes Inteq in 1991/1992. He also lectured on "Patent Practice for Engineers" at the University of Applied Science, Bremen and has most recently also presented Seminars on IP in Germany, China and the U.S.A.

He is a member of the German Chamber of Patent Attorneys (Member of the Board since 2002), EPI (European Patent Institute), AIPPI (GRUR national and international), AIPLA (American Intellectual Property Law Association), FICPI (International Federation of Industrial Property Attorneys), INTA (International Trademark Association) and LES (Licensing Executives Society).
