The Salt Lake City Chapter is one of over 35 LES Chapters in LES (USA & Canada.) The Salt Lake City Chapter, under the direction of the Chapter Leadership hold regular meetings where LES Members and outside speakers give presentations on topics relevant to technology transfer and licensing. Intellectual property, licensing and business development professionals will gather around the world to celebrate World IP Day and the importance of IP to the global economy.  Participating LES (USA & Canada) local chapters and LESI societies will host events open to anyone, including non members.  Events may include networking receptions and/or educational programs.

DESCRIPTION
An insider’s perspective of the legal battle surrounding so-called “gene patents.”  Ben will discuss various aspects of the current lawsuit, AMP et al. v. USPTO et al. (popularly styled ACLU v. Myriad), including the jurisdictional and patent-eligibility elements of the case as well his impressions of the recent Federal Circuit argument.  He will also discuss the public policy objections voiced by gene patent opponents and will provide a counter-perspective.

Ben received his juris doctor degree from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU and received his bachelor of science degree from UCLA in microbiology, immunology, and molecular genetics.
