Austin Chapter Meeting
DATE & TIME
Friday, February 22, 2013
11:30 AM - 1:00 PM
Panel Discussion: All Hybrids, Now & Forever
Lori W. O'Connell, Director, Law Department, Digital Networking, Freescale Semiconductor, Inc.
Don Shafer, Technical Fellow and Chief Safety Officer, Athens Group
Henry W. (Hank) Jones, Law Office of Henry W. Jones, III and Owner, Intersect Technology Consulting
The multi-disciplinary panel will analyze how and why specific, recent (last 12 months) and impending (next 24 months) global changes in both (a) software design and creation and (b) software licensing have triggered new, subtle, under-managed, unexpected challenges, risks, and opportunities for organizations in every industry.
The panelists will discuss:
- New recommended action items and best practices for software procurement, commercialization, and life cycle management
- New, novel, and useful license terms and words
- The financial and competitive dangers of common lingering software licensing myths
The session will cover: (a) traditional proprietary products and tools; (b) open source; and (c) the still-evolving phenomenon of "hybrid" applications (and tools) incorporating both "species" of code.
Particularly analyzed and discussed will be actual, recent operational "trainwrecks" and "lessons learned" disclosed by new, unpublicized litigations, government office disclosures, and other public but hard-to-find data.
The agenda will be geared to both start-up and established vendors, packaged product and custom development, and on-site hosted (traditionally licensed) and SaaS (web-accessed "software as a service") licensing and software
