DESCRIPTION
The presentation centers on the protection and enforcement of product designs through the use of intellectual property (IP) laws, including design patents, trade dress, and copyright. Covered topics will include (1) what products can be protected by design patents, trademarks or copyrights, (2) what one can do to avoid infringing other's design-related IP rights, and (3) how to enforce/license design-related IP rights.

SPEAKER BIO
Chris Carani is a partner and shareholder at the intellectual property law firm of McAndrews, Held & Malloy, Ltd. ("McAndrews"). The focus of Mr. Carani's practice centers on Design Law, which covers design patents, trade dress, and 3D copyrights. He is internationally recognized in this field, having litigated numerous disputes, lectured and published extensively, and counseled clients on a wide range of strategic design protection and enforcement issues. He is often called upon to render opinions and serve as a legal consultant/expert in high profile design law cases
Mr. Carani currently chairs the American Bar Association's Design Rights Committee. In the landmark U.S. design patent case Egyptian Goddess v. Swisa, heard by the en banc Federal Circuit Court of Appeals in 2008, he authored amicus briefs on behalf of the American Intellectual Property Law Association at both the petition and en banc stages. In 2009 and 2011, he was invited by the United States Patent & Trademark Office ("USPTO") to present as a keynote speaker for USPTO Design Day.
